The Room of Requirement

Excuse me while I relieve myself of the lust I feel for this art direction. This is why I started studying graphic design.

Harry Potter: Page To Screen

I’m also possibly getting this for my birthday! This is why I’m studying graphic design; a back-up career for me is art direction.

That is actually not a very big art department. That’s impressive.

Art Direction Apreciation:

This scene for me was one of my favourite moments of art direction from the entire saga. Everything about this space embodies the magic, beauty and quirkiness of Harry Potter. It is strongly likened to Prisoner of Azkaban - which in my opinion is the visually superior choice from the films before Deathly Hallows Part 2 - and was really stunning.

The towers of discarded objects all obivously selected to suit the ambient style of the Potterverse. Though not strictly art direction, the inclusion of the cornish pixies from Chamber of Secrets. And then, aside from the physical set, the visual effects of the fiend fyre and the sheild charm Harry casts.

I also have to mention that the camera work really augmented the art direction in this scene. It portrayed very nice movement and there was an excellent use of wide angles to give this large-scale feel - namely once the fiend fyre begins to chase the trio.

Bravo Stuart Craig. Not just for Deathly Hallows Part 2 for which you should take the Oscar, but also for your fantastic, invaluable contribution to creating Harry Potter as we know it.

[Click through for high-res]

I made this ages ago - if you’ve been around long enough you might remember the POA Art Direction spam I did. Anyway, I only JUST thought of a way to post it in it’s full-res glory and I haven’t even thought about this thing since I made it.

But, without further ado, I present the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Art Direction Appreciation Post.

And people think Art Direction is a weird choice. Look at this picture and tell me Art Direction wouldn’t be amazing!

My parents don’t realise they were part of the reason I was so lost.

Tonight at dinner:

Guest: “So, what are you up to Hayden? Are you working?”

Me: “*shakes head* No. I’m studying graphic design.”

Guest: “Oh, that’s very good. One of So-and-so’s boys did graphicblahblahblahblah…”

Side Note: Why is graphic design so impressive to everyone?

Mum: “Yes, it took us a while to get there but he finally did.”

Side Note: Why are parents always so condescending about their children’s choices when talking with friends?

Me: “Only because you wouldn’t let me.”

Mum: “Wha- When did we not let you?”

Me: “When you told me I had to go to uni but I couldn’t do something in the arts.”

Mum: “Oh, welblahblahblah…”

Mum & Guest: *talks condescendingly about how me and my creative siblings don’t understand how the arts aren’t lucrative enough to be a real choice and that graphic design isn’t as bad because it has safer job opportunities*

Yeah, thanks older generation. Because of you I had to figure out for myself that the arts was what I love AND THEREFORE what I had to pursue with complete abandon of social expectations and financial security.

Let’s learn something about Hayden, shall we?

I was completely directionless for almost a year after finishing school. Why? Well, in hindsight it was COMPLETELY because everything I loved was the arts but I was brainwashed to think that it wasn’t a viable career choice. I was on deferment from a double degree in Arts and Business - hadn’t chosen a major or subjects or anything - that my parents told me to have has a backup. All I had to cling to was my love of writing and my novel.

By the end of the year my parents told me I had to enrol in subjects at uni, again as a backup “but not in the arts because that’s not a real degree.” I know I was in a double degree with an arts component but I don’t even know. I was to study something so I’d have a qualification “and you can still write on the side and if you succeed with that then that’s great and the study won’t matter anymore.”

I couldn’t find anything I liked at all until I dared to look in the Arts section. Everything was perfect for me. However, still being brainwashed I chose to enrol in Anthropology (which I am legitimately interested in) and…well, I think it was Journalism and Psychology? Yuck. That’s just not me. I can’t imagine studying that.

Then my entire plan changed in literally one hour when, late one night - maybe a day after enrolling - I watched a video about the Harry Potter theme park. They had the designers of the Marauder’s Map on - they had helped somehow with the park - and I thought to myself, “Hayden, you want to be an art director for movies! You want to be the designer of something like the Marauder’s Map!” To say this thought was God inspired would be an understatement. I then stayed up for the next few hours researching design schools. The next day I had dropped out of the university completely and was enquiring about design school. That’s how I knew this was a God thing; normal Hayden would not be so reckless with his decisions (well, normal Hayden at the time).

To say Glee had something to do with this shift towards the arts would also be an understatement. Just one or two weeks prior was when I watched the first three Glee episodes available from America and fell in love. If you watch this video you’ll see how Glee changed my life and how it’s ever so relevant.

In truth, graphic design was just a backup to my true dream of being on Glee or being a writer. But I was truly happy and had a fulfilling, satisfying direction for the first time in a year.

Glee. Author. Art Direction.

This has been an incredibly personal post by Hayden.

Seven Harrys “This is the most complicated scene in the wooooooooooorld!”

“Like Rupert, walks with a realll wiggle in his hips. Y’know it’s actually quite a sexy walk, if, y’know, that’s appropriate to say.” Oh Jesus, I love you DanRad.

This is great. I love “the making of” extras on films. I always watch those things - especially art department ones. That is why one of my back-up plans is to work in the art department for films. Somehow I don’t think I could survive working behind the camera though…
