What the devil is going on here?!

Ok, rant time!

I’ve posted before about how fledgling the Australian entertainment industry is. Well, the new season line up is being advertised at the moment and I am not happy. Basically Australia is trying to be America and it’s not a good move for us. Why? We can’t do it and we’re falling for the most obvious traps.

Currently, the biggest TV programs we produce are the Australian versions of American/British originated talent shows; the amount of new Australian programs we produce is probably limited to the five fingers of my left hand; and now we’ve turned to creating trashy American reality TV rip-offs.

As a good illustration of the climate we’re in right now, over the past three days I have witnessed the airing of an American series of The Voice (we already finished ours this year) on one of our primary channels, advertising for a competition called “Dance Off” featuring American judges Kelly Rowland and Jason Derulo, and a story about a Floridian teenager being attacked by an alligator (we only have crocodiles in Australia) on national news. I’m not so concerned about the American judges because that could actually be quite positive but you can understand how Australia is really struggling with a practically non-existent media identity.

There is about one promising new Australian series that I’ve seen advertised but what worries me most of all is that, in what smells like desperation, Australia has decided to rip off the two most pitiful American shows. “Lara Bingle” is a show following the life of Lara’s family. Who’s Lara? Good question because I didn’t even know until the show started. She’s apparently a model who is really most famous for sleeping with a sports personality and ruining his marriage. Nice to see that we’re celebrating that, Australia. Good fucking work. It’s fairly obviously a response to the “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” joke of a series. She’s vapid and immature and the day the show goes off air couldn’t come sooner.

But that’s not the worst of it, because Australia responds to the abominable program known as “Jersey Shore” with it’s own “The Shire”. And what else can I say…it’s literally just as confoundingly shit as the original show. It’s about morons with money who live on the beach.

This is Australian TV currently.

Please let me out of here.

What shows are you watching right now?

8

Ever since the season end a few weeks ago ALL my shows have died. So what are you watching now?

TELL ME! TEEEEELLLLLL MEEEEEEE!

Just looked up some Glee ratings and thought I’d share…

4

Average Viewership Per Episode:

US Viewers (in millions):

Season 1: 9.16

Season 2: 11.64*

Season 3: 7.69

Average Comparisons:

Season 1 v. Season 3: +1.47

Season 2 v Season 3: +3.95

It’s quite worrying when a new season isn’t rating as high as the first season, even though it’s already been renewed for a 4th. And keep in mind, these are averages so it doesn’t matter so much that the season isn’t over unless the last few episodes pull in millions more views than usual. With graduation that might be possible. I think merchandising and music sales are important to Glee’s existence. But as it is Glee was number two in its time slot last week.

Here we can see here Glee’s ratings are hitting lows it hasn’t been at since it first started. Season 3’s Mash-Off, Hold On To Sixteen, and Extraordinary Merry Christmas follow as the next three least viewed episodes.

  • Season 2 had the highest rating episode ever, *The Sue Sylvester Bowl Shuffle, at 26.80 million viewers - almost double that of the next highest rating episode of that season (Britney/Brittany) at 13.51 (third highest overall) or the second highest rating episode ever (Hell-O) at 13.66.
  • Pilot received an audience of 9.62 million in its first airing.
  • Hairography was the least watched episode ever at 6.17 million while the recent Big Brother episode was the 4th least watched episode ever.

OMG BEST NEWS EVER!!

”Arrested Development creator Mitchell Hurwitz, at the New Yorker Festival cast reunion, just announced plans to bring back the critically acclaimed TV series for one more season — ahead of a long-anticipated Arrested Development movie.

The New York Times’ Dave Itzkoff reports that the new season will be composed of 9-10 “where are they now” episodes, providing context for the film.”

“Smash” Trailer

“Smash” is a musical drama that celebrates the beauty and heartbreak of the Broadway theater as it follows a cross-section of dreamers and schemers who all have one common desire — to be a “Smash.” Coming Soon to NBC.

I NEED THIS SHOW NOW! I thought it was a movie but it’s a show! Like Glee but Broadway!

Oh my goodness I can’t believe this is on my dash! Last night I was at a friends house and they have cable so we literally just watched music videos and crappy American reality TV shows all night (they aren’t kidding when they make those jokes about pitching ridiculous TV programs or say that everything gets turned into reality TV in America).

This was one of them and I swear this guy is a psychopath. I was waiting for him to pick up an icing knife and run someone through with it the entrie time.

Watching Starship on my TV! Hells to the yes!

I don’t care what anyone says, Glee is one of the most important shows to ever air.

It’ll go down in history as a revolutionary show that not only changed perceptions but changed television and society as we know it.

I would have loved for Glee to have been around when I went to high school, I think it could have really helped me come to terms with some things faster, I think it would have helped a lot of people I know who were struggling with themselves. But I’m happy that it’s here now.

You know, I’m not unrealistic, and I can see how some people would be put off by Glee, but you can’t completely discredit a show that has done so much to help kids accept who they are, to promote self expression, to constantly be bringing forth issues that need to be discussed, such as; safe-sex, religious tolerance, mental illness, bullying, and homophobia (just to name a few.)

And yes, it is a show about breaking into song- but it’s so much more than that. It’s about overcoming obstacles, it’s about family, unity, loving others and being true to the people who stick by you, all blended in a beautiful mix of humor and heart.

I love Glee with every fiber in my being.

Being a Gleek has made me a better person.

I love you Cara. You have are an enlightened individual.
