Film Review: Red Riding Hood

Direction…or Lack Thereof: “From the director of Twilight” should have served as the first warning sign. This movie was not the best. Catherine Hardwicke should be banned from directing because it is obvious from the parallels between this and the first Twilight that she sucks. She butchered any chance the Twilight franchise had of being taken seriously as a film saga and now, with the same brush, she has come at this movie and ruined what could have been a promising film, say, if Tim Burton directed it. I felt there was a lot of weird, unnecessary or irrelevant shots and bits added in the film. Again. Catherine Hardwicke is just bad.
Speaking of Twilight: The similarity between this film and Twilight is undeniable and, frankly, a turn-off.
Fear-factor: I was apprehensive about seeing this movie because I HATE suspense films. I watched the trailer and it seemed harmless enough - maybe a bit jumpy here and there. Don’t let the poster fool you. There is virtually nothing scary in this film.
Can you name the era?: There were some serious issues with continuity of time and place. Supposedly this is a medieval village. However, there were plenty of American accents the leading man was wearing black skinny jeans and a modern hairstyle throughout the whole film. Most notably, the village dance scene contained an alternate rock track that they performed a supposedly “traditional” dance to. A dance that resembled preschool clapping games crossed with sexual club movement. If their blatant appeal to modern culture wasn’t evident enough, they had two girls do the dance together - as being-sapphic-without-being-a-lesbian is in right now (a fad I do not comprehend)
The Set Design: Hardwicke seems to be cursed with a low budget - probably because she’s shit. The set was felt constrained, clunky and cheap. Everything was made entirely of logs, which could have been fine if it were done properly. It was just very poorly done. On a side note, my friend thought the wolf was very badly animated.
The Acting: There was quite a bit of…forced acting. That’s all I’ll say.
The Positives: I thought Amanda Seyfried did quite well in her role and the movie was entertaining despite its faults. I was kept guessing the riddle of the plot line until it unfolded - mainly because I over-analysed it as I thought it wasn’t going to be so close to the original story. There was some nice cinematography; unlike in Twilight, there was a nice amount of bright, contrasting colour in the scenery. Oh, and the blood moon looked really cool. I did enjoy it but I probably wouldn’t watch it again unless I was in the mood for something a bit blah.
I’m going to see Red Riding Hood tonight.
I DON’T do suspense movies (horrors or thrillers) because I always know what’s coming and then my imagination augments the terror.
…But I’m a sucker for intertextuality that involves fairytales. Plus I saw the trailer and it looked pretty harmless. I’m fairly certain I already know the entire plot of the film. Review to come after I watch it!
