I often see posts concerning how Glee represents the LGBT community. Things like, “why all the Finchel kisses but Brittana only get to hug?” Or, “look! Judging by the angle of Blaine’s face they must have cut out this Klaine kiss!” And more recently, “it’s about time they had a transvestite on this show! Remember in Rocky Horror where they changed the lyrics to Sweet Transvestite?” And I just think, why are you blaming Glee? Glee is the good guy here. Glee is the show that is pushing boundaries. Glee is the show presenting hot-button topics on international television. Glee is preaching acceptance. I’m not saying it’s perfect but it’s not the enemy.
People aren’t seeing the big picture. Glee is not an autonomous enterprise that can do whatever it wants. Glee is controlled by Fox and Fox is controlled by what makes money and that means ultimately the whole shebang is controlled by what people want. What society wants. In the end Glee has to try and not be cancelled. They don’t go to the effort of trying to promote acceptance just to cut out Klaine kisses and water down lyrics. That doesn’t make sense, does it? The censorship only happens because they don’t control it. I am convinced that if Glee was given free reign there would be a Klaine kiss in every episode and Mercedes would have sung the fuck out of Sweet Transvestite’s original lyrics.
