ALL WRONG!
Firstly, the picture of Audry Hepburn looks like it’s possibly from the period piece Roman Holiday…so that’s an interesting choice of photo considering it’s a polished publicity photo of a CHARACTER who is a PRINCESS. At any rate, this photo isn’t a natural, casual context like in the opposing one.
Secondly, the picture of the skunk lady is extreme to say the least. I’ve never seen anyone looking like that and it certainly isn’t the norm.
For this comparison to have any validity it needed to be a picture of a normal woman from both time periods (and also, the old-fashioned woman actually needs a discernible time period…). However, what could you define as a normal woman in today’s society?
The real answer to the question posed here is: the struggle for women’s rights. In the olden days there was a much more rigid expectation for the behaviour and appearance of a woman. Dissimilarity, in today’s culture women have been released of a lot of social expectation and are free to search for their own identity. As a result there are numerous factions of what is considered ‘the norm’ for women. The picture above is an extreme result of said freedom.
I think a more interesting question is “Men. What the fuck happened?” because the answer would be “nothing much” and that is much more distressing.
This has been a cathartic analytical rant by Hayden.
